Roger “RJ” Williams, Jr., BA ’11

I am a Petty Officer in the United States Navy. I am stationed in San Diego, CA on the USS Carl Vinson CVN 70 where I serve as an Information Technology Specialist. I currently supervise 25 United States Sailors. My duties include managing the ships computer networks for the 5,000 sailors onboard. I was a proud member of the Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi at UNCG. In the coming years, I plan to earn my Masters in Information Systems and Operations Management.

The Navy is a corporation consisting of human beings from every corner of America. Race, class and gender are things I deal with daily in the Navy, and my advanced knowledge of these subjects gives me the ability to communicate clearly with my co-workers and relate to them to create a feeling of solidarity within the office. Thoroughly understanding how humans interact with each other can help anyone in any career field. I can honestly say my job would not be done as efficiently if I did not receive my B.A. in Sociology from UNCG. The knowledge passed down from Dr. Steven Cureton, Dr. Shelly Brown, and Dr. Kenneth Allen is priceless. They all were so knowledgeable and personable. I learned a lot from every one of these professors.
