Dr. M. Elaine Burgess (1925-2020)

In Memoriam

Dr. M. Elaine Burgess, UNCG Professor Emeritus of Sociology, passed away on February 13, 2020. She earned a Ph.D. in Sociology at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1960 and taught at UNCG for 30 years. A specialist in social change and conflict, Dr. Burgess conducted research in South Africa and served as a fellow at both the Center for Interracial Studies in Rhodesia and the Center for Applied Social Science in Zimbabwe. She was the author of two books and the President of the Southern Sociological Society in 1980-81. Go here to read an interview with Dr. Burgess about her experiences at UNCG.
