Sociology Department Mourns Dr. Paul Luebke’s Passing

Rep. Paul Luebke speaks in support of HB184

The Syllabus: UNCG’s Paul Luebke, RIP.

Sad news this weekend in both the political and higher ed worlds over the weekend: state Rep. Paul Luebke has died.

Luebke was probably best known across North Carolina as a long-time member of the state House. A Democrat and a liberal, he represented Durham, where he lived, for the past 25 years.

At UNCG, he was an associate professor of sociology who had worked at the university for the past 40 years. He earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University and, during his UNCG tenure, wrote a couple of books on North Carolina politics.

Luebke was diagnosed with cancer a year ago but continued to serve in the House. This fall, he was running for his 14th straight term.

For more on Luebke, here’s the AP story as well as something from the N&O and WRAL. N.C. Policy Watch rounded up the Twitter tributes from both sides of the political aisle and a statement from the governor.
