Toya Dixon publishes essays on race and power

Recent MA graduate and Lecturer, Toya Dixon, has published a series of 3 articles on Impakter, an online magazine aimed at encouraging dialogue across generational cohorts on issues related to culture, society, style and philanthropy.

While at UNCG, Toya examined how Beth Richie’s “trap of loyalty” concept influenced Black women’s lives by defining expectations that they were to silently endure various forms abuse while buffering their families from racism. As a part of her thesis research, Toya interviewed Black women and femmes who actively participated in Black Lives Matter protests and the Women’s March on Washington. Her thesis committee included Dr. Westervelt and Dr. Dollar (co-chairs) and Dr. Brown-Jeffy.

Impakter initially contacted Toya requesting to interview her on issues related to Black feminism. After speaking to her, the editors invited her to author a series of articles on other topics surrounding race, politics and culture. All of Toya’s articles can be found at her author page located here: http://impakter.com/author/latoyadixon/
